The PlayStation 2 is Sony's second home console and the best selling console of all time with over 118 million units sold worldwide. Sony announced the PlayStation 2 for the first time on March 2, 1999.
It was first released in Japan on 4 March 2000, in North America on 26 October 2000.
The PlayStation 2 offered backwards compatibility, dramatically improved hardware, provided network capabilities, and an breathtaking library of 4218 officially licensed games.
Titles
The PS2 is hailed for its library filled with gems and plenty of games in every category you could image. The games that stand out the most are some of the best selling on the PlayStation 2 were titles from franchises and games such as God of War, Metal Gear Solid, Final Fantasy X, Kingdom Hearts, Jak, Rachet and Clank, Devil May Cry, Persona 3, Okami, Shadow of the Colossus.
Dominance
The PlayStation 2 instantly became a success and offered a wide library of games and powerful hardware for the time. PlayStation became the leader in the console space and amassed a universe of third party developers providing a steady stream of quality games throughout the PlayStation's life cycle. The PlayStation 2 mainly competed with the Nintendo Gamecube and Microsoft Xbox.
Legacy
The Sony PlayStation 2 is loved by everyone and to this day there hasn't been a better selling console. The PlayStation 2 will also go down in history as one of the consoles with the longest longevity with a lifespam. The PlayStation 2 was sold from March 4, 2000 until January 4, 2013 which was the same year the PlayStation 4 was released.
